Spirit Stick
If you remember me telling you a little bit about the origins and purpose of the Spirit Stick (Lawrence Herkmier and the NCA, etc.), you'd recall that awarding a spirit stick is not so much about skills and conditioning as it is about... well, SPIRIT.
There might be people who are better cheerleaders in that their moves are more accurate or more sharp, or they may be capable of more stunts or tumbling, or they may know more chants- but the spirit-stick recipient is the person who perhaps has the most positive attitude, the most supportive of their squad-mates, attempts the most direct crowd-encouragement, or if nothing else, they put forth the most effort (remember the formula e/a= s effort divided by ability equals success). So yes, it occasionally might go to someone who shows the most improvement. It's also important to remember that if you're not getting the spirit stick, that doesn't mean you aren't doing an awesome job.
Here are some of the qualities I will be looking for each game-
First, from our mission statement:
Positive, Committed Leaders stirring-up spirit, building excellence & character
* Who remains positive the whole game?
* Who demonstrates the most commitment?
* Shows leadership (managing, facilitating and setting an example- not JUST directing)
* Stirs-up school spirit (in crowd, team, and within the squad)
* Strives to improve
* and has personal integrity, principles and character
Those are pretty subjective, I admit, I can't see into your soul, after all, so I look for what's a lot easier to see. Things like:
* School Spirit
* Sportsmanship
* Energy
* Expression
* Encouraging/supportive
And, I hope you'll read the posts I make about John Wooden's Pyramid of Success, because some of his"bricks" also embody the meaning of the spirit stick:
* Friendship
* Loyalty
* Cooperation
* Enthusiasm
* Self-Control
* Team Spirit
I will be awarding our spirit stick on a weekly basis. Winners will receive it each Monday and are responsible for returning it the following Friday before the game. They're also responsible (of course) for not letting it touch the ground. That's not actually about bad luck- it's symbolic of the fact that you should always keep your spirit up!
Yes, I welcome your input, but no, it's not a democracy, it's definitely a coachocracy. I want to hear who you all think deserves it. I especially want to hear from past recipients, but I do reserve the final word.
The first week I genuinely was watching to see who was smiling the most often. It may be ironic that other people were giving Nina a hard time about forgetting to smile. I guess in a sense they all share in her spirit stick. All I know is that I felt like she did a good job overall, particularly considering how insecure she's been about not getting things right. Were other people better over all? Maybe so, but remember- the spirit stick isn't about being best, it's about spirit.
This second week, I am proud to announce that the spirit stick goes to Melissa. Melissa smiled a lot more this game than the last three (maybe that means she's getting more confident). I was really impressed with how much louder she was too- which is no small thing for those who know her.
I don't believe that the NCA founder and inventor of the "Herkie" jump meant for the spirit stick to be a mere consolation prize. I think he'd agree that being positive, having good sportsmanship, and encouraging others is more important in cheerleading than impressive stunts, choreographed routines, or sharp moves and jumps.
"The spirit stick got its start at a camp at the University of Redlands in California. We had a squad out there who cheered for the other groups and were full of spirit, but they had almost no talent. So, I decided they had to have some recognition because their great attitude was just as important as skill! I broke a little stick off a tree and awarded them the 'spirit stick' for their unusual spirit. Then we started doing this at all the camps, awarding the spirit stick to the groups who showed the most spirit each day, and whoever won it at the end of the week got to take it home with them. The spirit stick is the most outstanding award you can get. It's the symbol for spirit." ~Lawrence Herkimer

Quincy's Angels
Boyer Valley freshman Quincy Baker has a lot of school spirit. He's really wanted to participate in school activities and be a part of a team just like his older brother, Senior Colton Baker. But Quincy is a special needs student with a lot of limitations. It isn't always easy for him to communicate, he's endured hundreds of surgeries in his short lifetime and because he's so slim, a lot of people assume that he's more frail than he is.
For a long time it looked like school sports was just out of the question. But part way through football season last fall, Quincy had three "angels" intervene for him. Senior Football Cheerleaders Sasha Meggers, Meckensie Jensen and Christine Harriott realized that Quincy's school spirit could be put to good use. All three girls had served at different times as helpers or baby sitters for "Q" as they call him. Sasha was practically a sister to him, having grown up as next door neighbors with the Bakers in Dow City.
The three Seniors talked to their Coach, Ted Mallory, and Quincy's Mom, Paula Ritterbush Eickholt and the next thing he knew, Quincy was part of the squad. Meggers, Jensen, and Harriott had been cheering for Boyer Valley since the seventh grade, so Quincy's been exposed to every cheer they have and the girls had often taught them to him. They joke about being his girlfriends, but whenever he se's a photograph of any of the three girls in a yearbook or on Coach Mallory's desk, he lights up and points to his squad-mates.
Qunicy cheered at home football games in 2009. He plans on cheering at home basketball games this year too, although because of the inherent danger of balls, players and referees, he will be in the stands directly beside the squad. At the season opener in Missouri Valley, on of the cheerleaders was actually hit in the head with a ball. Coach Mallory frequently has to dodge colissions and crashes when he takes pictures for the yearbook and the Reporter.
Quincy's three angels have moved on from cheerleading. Harriott will graduate at semester, Jensen is putting more hours in at her job in Soldier and Meggers has been focusing on being Captain of the Boyer Valley Drill Squad- which just brought home their fifth first place State rating for pom in a row. Even though they're moving on, the girls still have plans for Quincy. They want to take him to his first prom.
This year's basketball Cheer squad features four Sophomores, two Freshmen and a Junior. Only Sophomore Cammey Hast has cheer in high school before, though another four have cheered in junior high. Mallory has been impressed with their energy, enthusiasm and initiative at practices.
"If they can push past their stage fright," he says "they will be incredibly effective at raising spirit at games." He thinks they've got a lot of skill and have a ton of potential.
Mallory has coached both middle school and high school cheer at Boyer Valley since 2001. Before moving to Iowa, he coached at Los Angeles Lutheran Jr/Sr High School in Sylmar, California. He lives in Charter Oak with his wife Bethany and their three daughters.

Just for fun
A yearbook staffer wanted me to shoot a pair of flying poms for one of the MS Cheer pages. I played with it in Photoshop some. Kinda fun.
Season Opener
Here's some shots from last night's game in Missouri Valley. I was having some troubles with my camera setting- and with gunk on the lens, so I didn't do nearly as well as I usually manage to. I'll try to do better next time.

2009-10 Tee Shirts
Tee shirts are $12
I've ordered them for people currently on cheer. Sorry, they haven't told me how soon they'll be done. Before Christmas is about all I can tell you. Please bring me your $12 as soon as you can. You won't receive a shirt until you've paid your $12.
Parents and friends are welcomed to support BV Cheer by ordering one too if they'd like them- just let me know the size and send your money and I'll add to the orders.
These are Coach Mallory originals, they're not from any catalog, Web site, designer or service- you're very own Coach put in the time, effort and graphic design skills. Therefore no one else anywhere on Earth will have shirts anything like these. Made just for you!
If we get hoodie sweatshirts, expect them to be $20. Football hoodies will be pink ink on a grey hoodie. Any ideas for Basketball's or MS colors for hoodies? Keep in mind I don't know what colors they'll be able to offer. Sure bet they'll have black, white, grey or purple though. Don't start bringing money for hoodies just yet- I haven't ordered any. Plenty of both Basketball and MS cheerleaders have also been asking about sweat pants too. I'll let you all know about sweats & hoodies when we get to it.

Mascot Shopping
Here are a bunch of mascot costumes I've been looking at. Naturally, I lean toward the $199.00 one because then we can use more of our money if we need to order 1 or 2 new cheer uniforms.
But I guess I also lean more toward the same look that we've had for the last 10 years ($760 cheapest). It's you guys who'll have to wear it for the next few years, so I'd love your input. Mean, cute, silly, gray, tan, pug? Let me know what you think as soon as you get a chance to look at a few of these.

Senior Night, Friday, October 9
I can not begin to explain how much I'm going to miss these girls. Good luck in college, National Guard, and just plain in life, Ladies. Oh wait, hopefully at least 2/3 will be back for basketball season, but still- I really care about ya and wish it wasn't coming to an end. Thank you for all your hard work over the years. Sometimes you fought like sisters, sometimes you laughed until you had to pee. All the time you lifted school spirit. I mean it when I say that I genuinely thank God for each of the three of you and have been blessed to get to be a part of your lives. I can't believe how much you've all changed in 6 years!
Love-
Coach

Kensie was sad that there weren't any pictures of her on the blog yet, so now there is one.- bundled up.

MS 2009 Debut
I talked up last year's MS squad as about the best I'd had since I've been at Boyer Valley- and they were, (although those who are now in 8th and 9th grade are too committed to volleyball right now for cheer). And I will be upfront about the fact that this new squad squabbled quite a bit and only knows maybe 5 chants so far- be that as it may, they... Read More managed something absolutely amazing that I've never seen a Jr Hi squad do until now at a first game, something that Varsity squads often struggle to achieve by mid season- THEY GOT THE CROWD TO CHEER WITH THEM! And to clap and sometimes even stand up, all game long. Now maybe that says something about those fans (mostly parents) but I still think it is incredible, and they are too. Their knowledge is fledgling and their skills have a ways to go, but their enthusiasm is unparalleled (if anything, we may need to curb it a bit). This will be an insanely amazing squad, just you watch!

Practice this week
Thanks for an outstanding first game Fiday night. You 4 are a lot of fun to drive with and I think you all did a great job. I threw a few pictures for you up onto the blog and facebook.
I'd like us to get together at least one day this week, preferably tomorrow (Tuesday).
We have 3 things that need to get done. Anyone who can come either during a studyhall, 7th period of after school can help. Here they are:
- A Run-Thru (River Valley Wolverines, red)
- A Pep-Rally outline (cheers/chants/games?)
- Locker Decs (for FB, VB, and XC)- either draw it or make it on the 'puter and I'll run 'em off, then you put names on them and/or color and hang them up. I have FB & XC rosters and can get VB from Hannah for you.
Thanks!

BV 21- MMC 7
Nice way to open the season. 2 hours away, but won by 21-7. Probably the best first-game ever as far as cheering goes; fairly loud, fairly frequent, awesome deep-rich pitch and perfect inflection, plenty of expression and VERY effective crowd encouragement. I'm one proud coach.

Cheer LEADING
From http://www.iowacheercoaches.org
Tips for Leading the Crowd in a Positive Way
By Jeanne Ehn
The following ideas are tips for cheer coaches and their cheerleaders to keep crowds going in a positive way at games.
- Be professional. Chewing gum, talking and laughing with each other, ignoring your job (cheering & leading the crowd) will turn a crowd off. They will decide you don’t care enough, so they won’t follow.
- Be approachable to the crowd. Be at the game early to warm up and be prepared. Take time to talk to them or explain a new chant before the game begins. Tell the crowd when they’ve done well and followed you.
- Use strong voices & make eye contact with the crowd. This shows confidence. If the crowd can’t hear the cheerleaders, they have no reason to follow. The same goes for eye contact. Look at everyone in the crowd. Not just a small group of people such as a group of friends. The crowd will feel ignored if you just cheer to a certain few.
- Repeat each chant at least 3-4 times. It takes that many times for the crowd to catch on to what you are doing. Once they start chanting with the cheerleaders, continue 2-3 more times.
- Chant while the team is in the huddle during football. Starting a simple chant like “Go, Go, Go…” when the down is fourth and one and the team is in the huddle will have a lot more impact than during the play itself.
- Cheer often: at least every other play. This will not only keep you mentally in the game, but your crowd is more likely to follow. You should cheer between EVERY play when the game is very close or momentum is starting to switch.
- Let anyone start chants when necessary. During a game many of the chants are probably started by a captain or someone with more experience, but when the game is at a pivotal point, the most important thing is keeping the chanting going so anyone should be able to start a chant: even if you repeat chants. Practicing/Rehearsing this in practice will help everyone be ready for game situations.
- Urge the Crowd by talking to them. “Yell with us!” “Louder!” “I can’t hear you!” And then remember to praise the crowd when they follow your lead – thumbs up, clapping above your head, “Good job, Comet fans!” (use your mascot)

Really need to know
I really need to know who'd going to this camp next weekend.
Originally Sasha was the only "no-go" and Christine and Cammey were the only "for-sures," but Kaitlin, Cammey and Kensie have all since given me "well, I don't-knoooows."
My family & I are going down to KC Tues-Thurs but I'll have my cell phone. Please email, facebook, call or text before Tues or call or text after Tues.
Also, Cammey & Kait can cheer for football even if you go out for volleyball because they have more than enough experience. Upcoming Freshman I'd consider the same deal- but only if you come to this UCA Camp.
I know it's only June so it's early to be asking this, but I'd love to know what Freshmen are interested in cheering for football. Before school let out Kaitlin was on the fence about FB too. WE NEED CHEERLEADERS. FB is important because of Homecoming, but it's actually a LOT easier (and some think more fun than BB) There are half as many games so it's WAY easier to letter and there's a lot more room to move around.
If we know now, we could conceivably practice a few times before school starts. If we don't know now and something happens so that any of our 5 FB cheerleaders don't cheer, we'll be forced to open it up to new recruits in the fall with little or no experience. Games start too soon to really have tryouts AND get started practicing.
So, again, incoming freshmen and Kaitlin, please facebook, email or text me to let me know if you're in. And again, EVERYBODY, let me know if you're coming to camp next weekend ASAP. I need to know if Christine's the only one going or if I need to request a refund (hope there's no penalty).

Jen Houston mentioned to me that she might be working for someone, but I don't remember if it was Victoria or Johanna. We need everyone to work because I need to also take MS track pictures for yearbook. I start all the track meets, and originally I work 2 and 1/2 and Mrs. Cogdill would work 2 1/2 but she can't make it this week, so I will work this this whole one and she will work the next two. So I really need a full crew. Thanks for your help everyone.

Phinally got out photo shoot!
I took something in the neighborhood of 360 pictures this afternoon of the 2008-09 Basketball squad. That's probably because I was really "off my game" and at least 120 of them turned out to be lousy. Gimme a week or two and I'll weed out the bad ones, then weed out the best ones, then edit and adjust those best ones and burn CDs for you and upload a few to Facebook. But for now, here's one that I tripped-out a little in Photoshop for you. Wish I remembered what was so funny.

Re: cheer camp
Actually, the UCA Camp June 19-20 is at West Harrison High School. You can find out more about it from
Coach Gina Felton at gfelton-at-w-harrison.k12.ia.us
or Lee Trudell at ltrudell-at-uca.com
I am planning on sending at least 6 girls to it. It is an outstanding camp. Gina just told me tonight, that they're adding a one day stunting-only camp on Sunday June 21. If I can get enough girls to do it, I know it would be worth it.
I wrote a story on last summer's camp for the Mapleton PRESS. You can read it at http://cheercoach.blogspot.com/2008/06/uca-camp-at-west-harrison-jun-20-21.html
Hope to see you there this year!

Mr. Mallory,I am the varsity cheer coach at Clarke-Osceola and my girls saw that there is a 2 day camp at your school in June. Is it possible that we can attend or is it a private one? Please let me know the details.Thanks,Jaci Baumfalk
BRRRRRR-
Here are some girls I am especially fond of. 4 of these 5 ladies have cheered since junior high and I really think of them each as a goddaughter. Hope their parents and real godparents don't mind. That's Cammey running hurdles above.
Kensie and Cammey had to run in the first home track meet. Can you tell it was cold? Cammey came in and worked concessions after she was done. She does have an awesome work ethic, but I suspect that she wanted to warm up a little.
Christine is working all the track meets to fill in where other people can't (and to get some service hours for NHS) She's also Yearbook Editor. Think she's important to me? You should see what a beautiful painter she's becoming too- without having taken Drawing first!
Sasha is such a steady Eddy. And (at least as far as I ever see) mellow and easy going too. If Christine is Rabbit and Kensie is Tigger, then Sasha is probably Pooh. And school spirit? Her blood runs purple. Gettin to be a pretty good photogrpaher too.
Rena came back to visit from Buena Vista. We tried to talk her into helping at the concession stand, but she's paid her dues. Her Junior & Senior years, she probably worked concessions more than all her classmates combined, when she didn't have to cheer, that is. This Spring she's trying out for her college's squad. Good luck!
