FOCUS on PRIDE

Been talking a lot these last few days with other teachers about what our school needs so I know we'd have a lot of allies in this like Mrs. Beam (StuCo), Mrs.Lee (NHS), Coach Pete & Mrs. Pippit, Mr. Marlin, Mrs Klien (Sub & alumna, former StuCo)...

We need PRIDE.

I'll get you all some dates for Cheer Camp as soon as I can and I'll preach to ya on the Pyramid of Success at least once a week like I do every summer (please don't just plan do ignore those), but right now, besides wishing you all a good summer- I want to plant that thought in your heads-

We need PRIDE.

Our job as a Spirit Squad is to build, encourage, inspire, & spread School PRIDE.

So all summer long, sure I'd love ya to walk, bike, jog, run, or swim to keep in shape; sure I'd love for you to practice cheers & jumps and go online to try to learn more, but the biggest thing I want ALL OF US to do this summer- brainstorm & germinate ways that we can create more school PRIDE.

Weekly Spirit posters? Locker Decs for clubs & orgs, not just teams? Wearing letterman jackets? Spirit awards? Notes & Thank Yous?

These are only a few and they'll mean a lot more if they come from YOU.

So remember; our focus next year is PRIDE.

Start thinking.

Think PRIDE.

There's Always Sumthin'

It's come to my attention that someone thinks I was hypocritical for not letting one candidate's sister help judge but allowing another's cousin to judge. First of all both of these candidates made it back onto squad so it should be a moot point.

Secondly, I was unaware that they had any relationship until the day of tryouts.

Third a sister is a whole lot closer than a cousins. What's more, I don't believe they're even first cousins, I think they'd second cousins or furhter (although I'll admit that I'm not sure).

It's pretty hard not to be related in small towns like this. We had another candidate who has a sister who's a former cheerleader whom I didn't have judge and another potential candidate (didn't end up trying out) who's first-cousin recused themselves of judging earlier.

Besides, this one "cousin" judge we did have has lived away from Dunlap for more than 10 years and didn't know any of the other candidates and I trust them to be impartial. Besides, having 4 other judges, another one of of whom was totally unfamiliar with all of the candidates more than balanced out any potential partiality.

I apologize to anyone who perceived any hypocrisy or unfairness in the process. Please also remember that in addition to an average of the judges' scores from yesterday, candidates also have academic score and teacher-evaluation scores aggregated in so that the whole thing is as objective as we could design it. Life isn't always fair, but I've worked hard to make this a process that is both as rigorous and as objective as possible.

As usual- please try your best to stay positive, especially about your new squadmates, so that we can build our program and as a result contribute to a positive, inclusive, and encouraging community at our school. Please know that that's my goal and that I have your best interests at heart, as well as that of our squad's, and ultimately our school's best interests as well. Thanks.

Congratulations to the 2014-15 Cheerleaders:

  • Mali Bounsana

  • Larissa Hollinger
  • Lara Laubscher
  • Liberty Monk
  • Madison Seuntjens
  • Jennifer Zehner

  • Cheyann Marshall

Re: Track Concessions Schedules

NEVER MIND, Cancel that last desperate-sounding email. I've just been told that the Rolling Valley Conference Meet on Monday, May 5 is NOT at BV/Dunlap, it's going to be at West Harrison. Whew! Told ya my brain's been fried this Spring. Sorry to confuse things.

AUUUGH! I can't believe I did this- We have ANOTHER meet on Monday, May 5! I swore I had them all and we only had 5. Not sure how I missed this 6th one. Its the Rolling Valley Conference Track Meet @ Dunlap. HS, and I think it's co-ed, which means that our track members won't be able to work it.

I'm looking for volunteers. So far this season, you've been great workers and frankly, we're actually having fun aren't we? Please let me know ASAP so I can put a schedule together this week. Thanks. Sorry about this. My brain's been fried this Spring.

PS & FYI- I'm going to see if NIkki will work for me this Thursday, May 1 because our daughter Annamarie has a school concert that night that I'd like to go to. But I'll let you know if she can or not as soon as she lets me know.

Okay- I've gone over the Girls & Boys Track and the Golf Schedule and this looks like the best I can do for all of you. I'm sending copies to our Golf & Track coaches so that they'll know you'll need to miss practice those days.

I'm asking Nikki Ahart to be the adult at the next meet because I'm scheduled to go to a technology conference in Omaha that day. (Will that still work for you Nikki?- please let me know, because I can come back early if I have to).

Frankly this ends up being a little unfair to those not in Golf or Track because instead of everyone working 2 meets, they all have to work 3 each. But we're a small school and I'd rather encourage you to be in more than one sport. I may try to think of some special reward/thank-you to those of you working multiple meets though, I really appreciate your help.

I scheduled more people for the Apr 24 meet than the May 1 one because while they're both MS, this upcoming one has 6 schools, whereas the May meet has only 5.

Please let me know ASAP if there is a problem with any of these dates of if you get sick- so that we can try to find a replacement for you. Thanks everyone.

Hi,
Ted Mallory sent you a board, JOYology.

A note from Ted:
Ideas for staying positive, or at least staving off full-blown depression. Fighting the good fight against negativity and nihilism. Also- Ideas you can all help me with to try to improve our climate and culture at Boyer Valley. We need to ask how we can make this a more positive place. At the risk of breaking the division of church and state; I think we should do what it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:11- "encourage one another and build each other up."

Make sure that you "Bring it!"

Okay- gotta say this- I really love this 2013-14 Squad. If I could keep you forever I would. But here's a reminder about our upcoming tryouts; there's 6 boxes, there's only room for 6 + a mascot in the van for away football games. Rules say only 6 at away basketball games. I anticipate taking 8, I know a lot of people are hoping fo 10. Plan on 8. No one really likes being an alternate anyway.

We had 6 Sophomores, a Freshman and a Junior this year. There's at least 3 people planning on trying out who'll be Seniors, those same 6 who'll now be Juniors, a couple who'll be Sophomores and maybe one or two Freshmen. In other words; this year its gonna be competitive.

So be ready for it. Bring your "A-Game." Here's a couple of links that you can look through for videos and ideas to help you get ready:

CHEER/TRACK REMINDER

Jade Allard, Catherine Dublinske, Larissa Hollinger, & Chelsea Willis

I'll be there tomorrow night (Thurs 4/25) rather than Nikki- she had a conflict, so I'm just leaving the techc conference early. See ya there.

Just FYI- I had Liberty scheduled to work but it sounds like she has to do something with/for the hs girls track team, so Larissa volunteered to work tomorrow night- thanks Blue.

Here's who's scheduled to work the next three:

Tryouts

Mon May 19 I'm gone with the 8th graders to the state capitol till 4:30/5. Thurs/Fri are MS Jammers events, so if we hold practice those days no 8th graders can try out. That Fri is State Track and it may be that some potential cheerleaders end up going.

Then there are golf and track meets and an early out the week before.

Therefore; It looks like we'll only have enough time for one pre-tryout practice day, and the tryout will have to be on a Wednesday.

Any 8th - 11th graders interested in going out for Cheer or Mascot at Boyer Valley next year: please pick up teacher-recommendation and parent-permission forms from Mr. Mallory beginning Wed. April 16.

FRI May 16- PAPERWORK DUE
TUE May 20- Tryout Practice
WED May 21- CHEER TRYOUTS

Please pass this share this post with anyone you think would be a viable candidate for Cheer or Mascot. Be sure to check out http://cheerpositive.wikispaces.com to learn or review chants, jumps & the fight song dance!
