CORRECTION: Track Concessions Thurs 4/23

Sorry about that last email. Mrs. Cogdill caught that I was getting a week ahead of myself.

Remember workers, if you need to trade, you can ask your parents, NHS members, or other cheer or drill members, but please let Mr. Mallory know about the arrangements you make as soon as possible.

But Jen Houston DID mention to me that she might be working for someone, but I don't remember who for, I think it might have been for Kristen?? We need everyone to work because I need to also take MS track pictures for yearbook. I start all the  track meets, and originally I work 2 and 1/2 and Mrs.Cogdill would work 2 1/2 but she can't make it this week, so I will work this this whole one and she will work the next two. So I really need a full crew. Thanks for your help everyone.

Thank you all for your help! This is a great group, so I know we'll have a lot of fun.

SORRY ABOUT WHATEVER CONFUSION MY PREVIOUS EMAIL/BLOG POST MAY HAVE CAUSED!!!

Phinally got out photo shoot!

I took something in the neighborhood of 360 pictures this afternoon of the 2008-09 Basketball squad. That's probably because I was really "off my game" and at least 120 of them turned out to be lousy. Gimme a week or two and I'll weed out the bad ones, then weed out the best ones, then edit and adjust those best ones and burn CDs for you and upload a few to Facebook. But for now, here's one that I tripped-out a little in Photoshop for you. Wish I remembered what was so funny.

Re: cheer camp

Actually, the UCA Camp June 19-20 is at West Harrison High School. You can find out more about it from

Coach Gina Felton at gfelton-at-w-harrison.k12.ia.us
or Lee Trudell at ltrudell-at-uca.com

I am planning on sending at least 6 girls to it. It is an outstanding camp. Gina just told me tonight, that they're adding a one day stunting-only camp on Sunday June 21. If I can get enough girls to do it, I know it would be worth it.

I wrote a story on last summer's camp for the Mapleton PRESS. You can read it at http://cheercoach.blogspot.com/2008/06/uca-camp-at-west-harrison-jun-20-21.html

Hope to see you there this year!

Mr. Mallory,
I am the varsity cheer coach at Clarke-Osceola and my girls saw that there is a 2 day camp at your school in June. Is it possible that we can attend or is it a private one? Please let me know the details.
Thanks,
Jaci Baumfalk

BRRRRRR-

Here are some girls I am especially fond of. 4 of these 5 ladies have cheered since junior high and I really think of them each as a goddaughter. Hope their parents and real godparents don't mind. That's Cammey running hurdles above.

Kensie and Cammey had to run in the first home track meet. Can you tell it was cold? Cammey came in and worked concessions after she was done. She does have an awesome work ethic, but I suspect that she wanted to warm up a little.
Christine is working all the track meets to fill in where other people can't (and to get some service hours for NHS) She's also Yearbook Editor. Think she's important to me? You should see what a beautiful painter she's becoming too- without having taken Drawing first!
Sasha is such a steady Eddy. And (at least as far as I ever see) mellow and easy going too. If Christine is Rabbit and Kensie is Tigger, then Sasha is probably Pooh. And school spirit? Her blood runs purple. Gettin to be a pretty good photogrpaher too.
Rena came back to visit from Buena Vista. We tried to talk her into helping at the concession stand, but she's paid her dues. Her Junior & Senior years, she probably worked concessions more than all her classmates combined, when she didn't have to cheer, that is. This Spring she's trying out for her college's squad. Good luck!

Thirsty? Think about this...

WATER
#1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half the world population)

#2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.

#3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as 3%.

#4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

#5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

#6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

#7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a ! printed page.

#8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%., and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day?

COKE
#1. In many states the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

#2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.

#3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous China .

#4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminium foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

#5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

#6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

#7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminium foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

#8... To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into the load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

#1. the active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid.
It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.

#2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup! (the concentrate) the commercial trucks must use a hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.

#3. distributors of Coke have been using it to clean engines of the trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a glass of water? Or a Coke?
And you really think that Pepsi, Dr. Pepper or Mt. Dew are any better- How about Diet Coke or Coke Zero?

Re: Track Concessions Sign ups

CHEER CAMP

Mark your Calendars NOW. PLEASE make room, make plans, let your parents and employers know WAY ahead of time...

The UCA Cheer Camp at West Harrison this summer is Fri/Sat Jun 19/20

Cheap, fun, and WAY helpful!
You'll learn chants, cheers, a dance, and tons of stunts!

91 girls, 6 area schools- and it only promises to get bigger next year. The central location may draw kids from both Omaha/Council Bluffs and Sioux City.

Instructors from Iowa State University and Northern Iowa University put the girls through a grueling but fun regiment of cheering, dancing, stunt building and tumbling.

$60 per cheerleader for a two-day camp is great when many three day camps can cost as much as two to three hundred dollars.

Anyone who's even just considering coming out for Cheer at Boyer Valley next year should plan on attending. See Mr. Mallory if you're interested.

Sample some of my writing, share what you're reading

Here is a collection of things I've written that I've posted on http://www.goodreads.com
GoodReads is a sort of a social networking sight for readers. You can write book reviews, join reading groups and discuss your favorite authors. I really recommend it to anyone who loves reading or writing.

Max Nix (Poetry)
description: Years and years of bad free-flow-of-consciousness poetry. No meter, no rhyme, no reason.

These are drippings from as long ago as twenty years ago and as recent as days ago. I don't claim to be a very good poet, but sometimes words can do what even drawing, painting, and photography can't. Here is my humble offering. Maybe you can relate to some of them.

chapter 1: Where am I going? (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 2: Your escape (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 3: My Grandpa's Farm (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 4: 3,000 feet over Prescott (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 7: Metapoem (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 8: Who I see in you (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 9: Potter to the pot about the wheel (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 10: Grey hair (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 11: Run aground (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 12: Unrealistic expectations (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 14: Tell zombies goodbye (added 03/12/09 )
chapter 15: I wish I had known you (added 03/12/09 )

Pappa Bear (Sports)
description: How a nonathletic, middle-aged, heterosexual male became a middle school/high school cheerleading coach and the lessons it taught him about life, teamwork, confidence and fatherhood.

Once upon a time I thought about using a blog as a jumping off point for eventually writing a book about being a male cheer coach. Never have seemed to find the time or the self-discipline. But at least one journalist told me that they thought I'd make a good feature story because there are so few male cheer coaches and that maybe I should consider writing a book about it someday. Not much to it yet, but here's a start.

chapter 1: I was a teenage werewolf (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 2: Don't look down (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 3: Thanks, I needed that (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 4: Loud and Proud (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 5: Purpose Driven Cheerleading (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 6: A funny thing happened on the way to the game (added 03/11/09 )

Ted's Column (Humor)
description: Self effacing humor and common sense from the pages of a small town newspaper.

'Ted's Column' has appeared weekly in the Charter Oak-Ute NEWSpaper since 2002, and then in the Schleswig Leader and the Mapleton PRESS, a regional paper serving several communities in western Iowa.

I wrote about all sorts of things but always tried to infuse the column with humor. My motto was "Sex, Politics, and Religion; not necessarily in that order."

I went on an indefinite hiatus late in 2008, but continue blogging at http://tedscolumn.blogspot.com

chapter 1: What the snow-blower taught me. (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 2: Murphy's Law & Order (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 3: The existential angst of an ameture editorial cartoonist (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 4: The first Thanksgiving football game (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 5: Labor Day is a lot of work (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 6: Corny Concerto (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 7: Obscure holiday leaving you a basket case? (added 03/12/09 )

Me ka pule; Pirate prayers and prophecies
description: Bible studies, devotions, prayers, and essays on God, faith and spirituality. A former church youth counselor and Bible study leader writes about how God can become real in your everyday life. You can read more religious commentary, at http://malloryprayer.blogspot.com

chapter 1: Fruit of the Spirit; You reap what you sow (added 03/13/09 )

chapter 16: Lord’s Prayer; In our own words (added 03/13/09 )
chapter 17: Lord's Prayer; Praying the Lord's Prayer for someone else (added 03/13/09 )
chapter 19: Prayer of Jabez; How to Bless Your Neighbors Through Prayer (added 03/13/09 )
chapter 24: Fruit of the Spirit; Joy (added 03/13/09 )

Politics & Religion
description: Thomas Jefferson once said, "I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just." I feel like Christianity has been Shanghaied by people who say they love Jesus, but act more like disciples of Machiavelli.

So, like Luther posted his 95 Theses on the church door in order to incite critical thinking and provoke discussion and debate about the hypocrisies of the church in his time- I started posting things here that may challenge Christians to question their motivations and positions on things in our society and politics.

I don't mean to undermine anyone's faith or to promote heresy, but when I read Jesus' Words, especially in Matthew 5 and Luke 6, I see something radically different than what televangelists, radio prophets and Republican politicians espousing. Scurvy, bilge-sucking, sons of biscuit-eaters!

This all makes me feel like a mutant, a freak, and an outcast. Conservative Christians fear for my eternal salvation whereas secular liberals see me as part of the problem and not the solution. So in the so-called "culture wars" I'm caught in the cross-fire because I think that both sides are wrong and neither side wants to hear it.

chapter 1: What the Fourth is for (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 5: Be thankful you didn't live in the past (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 7: Raiders of the lost R's (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 9: Crass comment cuts off debate (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 10: Need for non-profit prophets (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 11: Don't be afraid to just knock (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 23: Wrong man for the job (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 28: Attitude of gratitude (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 36: Jefferson Portrait (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 39: Dog eat dog (added 03/11/09 )
chapter 44: Advice on your 228th Birthday (added 03/12/09 )

Concordia University's songs

Alma Mater
Dear old Tow’r that shines above us,
Dear hearts that catch the gleam,
Though miles and years remove us
Of you we’ll always dream.
From Plum to Blue and yonder,
We rise Concordia’s own
To praise as far as we wander
The good that on us shone

Fight Song
On, Concordia, On, Concordia,
Pep that team of yours.
Fight, Concordia, Fight, Concordia,
‘Til we win this game.
Rah! Rah! Rah!
On, Concordia, On Concordia,
Pep that team of yours.
Fight, fellows, fight
And we will win this game

Track Concessions Sign ups

We need to have at least 5 workers for each meet. Please sign up outside the office or tell Coach Mallory or Coach Cogdill ASAP. Anyone not signed up by or before April 3 will be arbitrarily assigned by Mr. Mallory.

We MUST be there IMMEDIATELY after school because the meets start at  either 4 or 4:30

  • Thurs April 23 BV Junior High Invitational

  • Thurs May 14 Junior High Conference Meet (starts at 2:30)
Kaitlyn Bonsall, Makayla Carter, NEED more WORKERS

It is mandatory that all  Drill Team members,  Cheerleaders, and Mascots help with track concessions. This is cheerleading's only fund raiser- so if you really want warm-ups or poms, you need to pitch in. Even if you only cheered for football but not basketball. I give 8th grade cheerleaders who're planning on coming out next year the option of volunteering, but it isn't mandatory for them. Anyone who fails to volunteer for at least one track meet by the end of February, will be arbitrarily assigned one. It is your responsibility to make sure  that your assigned day is covered. even if your parent serves for you or you get an NHS member in need of service hours to do so. Please make arrangements with your track coaches, your employers, your parents, boyfriends and friends to be at at least one of these meets.

Please forward this email to anyone on Drill whom you have an email address for but I don't. I'll post it on Facebook as soon as I have an opportunity.
