Wild at Westwood

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

Yeah, about that...

Both Varsity and Jr High basketball games are canceled for tonight.

Of course, this Saturday may be the only date available to make this game up, I will try to keep you posted. This weekend is my daughter Ellen's birthday, so if we do have a make up game, I may not be there.

Good news, I have your hoodies, tees, and sweats.
Bad news, since I won't be at school tomorrow, you won't get them till Thursday! Sorry.

I will send you this news via email and maybe Facebook. I hate making phone calls, but I suppose I'll do that too here within the hour.

See you someday,
Coach

No decision yet about tonight

No Jr Hi game tonight.

The School tells me that Coach Pete will make a decision about tonight's Varsity game sometime around 1 PM

I will email you, post it on the web, and make phone calls as soon as I know if it is canceled, meanwhile just assume that we're still on and try to be at school by around 4:30 again.

I am a snow/ice driving coward myself, and your safety is important to me,  so if you parents prohibit you from coming tonight, I won't count it against you as far as lettering goes.

Just a reminder that I won't be at school tomorrow because my daughter has a therapy session for her double-vision in Omaha, so there won't be any practice.

My home phone is 678-3397 and my cell # is 269-5853 if you or your parents have any questions.

See you... eventually
Be warm and well,
Coach

Video from IKM game

Funny, back when I was coaching at LA Lutheran, I'd go out of my way to try to tape one or two entire games and have girls watch themselves so they'd know what they needed to improve on. Now I post a digital video clip that's only a few second long just for the heck of it because I think kids will think it's amusing. Takes forever to upload though, that part's a pain.

Fun with camera settings

Congrats to BV Cheer Alumn

The Dec. 6 Dunlap Reporter had a familiar face on the front page. Aleigh, BV class of '05 is working on her doctorate of veterinary medicine at ISU won Miss Rodeo Iowa 2008!
Way to go "Aleigh-Gator!"

Merry Christmas

They're $65
Whenever you're able to pay, you can take your pair.
Tees and hoodies are due in next week.

First Varsity Game

Here we were at Manning, practicing a splits-mount in the hall before the game, and chanting away at the girl's game.

Coach's quick critique:
♥=loved it ♣=problem ♦=asset ♠=need to work on
Great over all effort, especially for a first game. Great teamwork
♣ ¿Dondé está Sasha y Brittany? No está aqui. ¿Por que no?
Good pitch, fast learners, work well together, awesome planning & creativity
Need to be LOUDER!

Learning from the opposition

I don't usually put pictures of other squads on this blog, and Manning wasn't necessarily the greatest thing I've ever seen (they're not awful either) but I did want to point out at least two things we can learn from them-

Here they're in a prep during a time out- no HUGE achievement, but notice what they're doing that we haven't managed yet. They're leading a chant while in the prep, not just doing a chant that leads up to one. Takes stamina, kudos to them.

Here they're doing the same slpits-mount that we were working on with Kristen. Notice, the side bases have her hands and arms, not her thighs. She does a great job of pointing her toes too. Kudos again. We'll get it too, we just have to practice.

Over all, good job Manning Red-Dogs-
♥ strong stunts, great pitch, very synchronized
♣ painfully slow tempos

Reminder

Just want to remind you that there is an away game in Manning tomorrow night (Tues 12/4) .

I understand that it's cold and that it's a lot to have to wear your uniform all day twice a week, so please plan on wearing your uniforms on Friday, but do dress up or at least wear BV/purple, black, white tomorrow to school, but be sure to bring your uniform to wear to the game.

Hope you had a great weekend,
Coach

Reminder

Just a reminder, if you can make it, there is a JrHi Girl's Basketball game in Dow City at 4 this afternoon, even though there wasn't school.

BV school website

Always trying to improve the website, I've been working on a couple of
things the last couple of days.

* About a week ago SOCS updated our template, that meant that you
can now see more headlines on the front page and the navigation
section has been cleaned up a little with "drop-down" menus.
* We totally revamped the "Standards & Benchmarks" page under
District; Curriculum. Lots of thanks to AEA rep. Terri Bush and BVN
Title Reading teacher Alison Leisinger for their help with that.
* It dawned on me that I haven't been utilizing the top banner
position, so I coded-in scrolling marquees to with the Drill and
Basketball teams good luck in their contests this weekend. This will
be a great way to flash important announcements (like cancellations
and postponements due to weather)
* SOCS now offers polls. We could have a different poll on every
section and subsection if anyone has any suggestions. I put a simple
presidential Iowa caucus poll on the front page. Vote early and vote
often!
* And... TaDa! I revamped our masthead. It just seemed like
another way to help Boyer Valley's website stand out from other
school's, not that the in-house graphic designers at SOCS don't do a
great job- but I really like the new look.

As always, please email me anything you think should get put on the site.

Varsity Letter Requirrements

Just thought I'd remind y'all about what it takes to letter. Last year we had quite a problem with absenteeism. Mind you, I am very lenient and flexible- if you are genuinely committed to the squad and investing time, energy, effort and enthusiasm, I will usually be as committed to you as I can. But, if you are unable to devote much time or energy into your squad this season, then you may need to reconsider your priorities. Grades, jobs, family, friends, boyfriends, church, freetime- they all compete for your interest. There's no shame if one or some of those are higher priorities than cheerleading- but it would be a shame to say you'll be there and then not show up.

LETTER REQUIREMENTS
1. Cheer at every assigned athletic event:
a. Unless illness, then notify sponsor.
b. Must be present to support the team if unable to cheer,
but able to attend.
c. May miss no more than one game during football season
and two during basketball season- excused or unexcused

2. Must complete each season unless:
a. Injured in competition or practice
b. Illness

3. Must be, in the opinion of the sponsor and other faculty
members, an asset to the squad and the entire student body.
Factors considered:
a. Over-all conduct and citizenship (includes parties, drinking, drugs, fighting & inapropriate lewdness as well as sportsmanship)
b. Cooperation (Both coachability and interaction with squadmates)
c. Faithful practice attendance and work (excessive absences may result in removal- we need you to work with us for all of us to be in sync and function as a unit)
d. Training habits (make healthy choices- see "a.")
e. Must do a fair share of the work in preparation for games
and other cheerleading/dance activity.

4. Practice requirements:
a. Must attend every practice unless ill or excused by the sponsor
(excessive absences may result in removal- we need you to work with us for all of us to be in sync and function as a unit)

Thanksgiving week

Hey ladies,

Hate to do this to you- but I have parent/teacher conferences at 4:15 in Ute for my daughters.
Why don't we plan on only practicing on Tuesday this week?
I have confidence that Buck and Bonsall will learn quick enough and the rest of you know enough already that we should still be alright.
Then we have to really hit it hard when we come back after Thanksgiving on the 25th.
Sound good?
I don't have email addresses entered in my gmail for Lacy and Kaytlin yet and Jonesie doesn't even have email- so if you all could make sure that the three of them know, that would be great.

Thanks,
Coach

Pregnant Turkey

No, this isn't one of my family's stories, this is just a funny forward that I received. But I'd LOVE to hear someone who reads it try this prank on their family this Thanksgiving, this is CLASSIC!

One year at Thanksgiving, my mom went to my sister's house for the traditional feast. Knowing how gullible my sister is, my mom decided to play a trick.

She told my sister that she needed something from the store. When my sister left , my mom took the turkey out of the oven, removed the stuffing, stuffed a Cornish hen, and inserted it into the turkey, and re-stuffed the turkey. She then placed the bird (s) back in the oven.

When it was time for dinner, my sister pulled the turkey out of the oven and proceeded to remove the stuffing. When her serving spoon hit something, she reached in and pulled out the little bird.

With a look of total shock on her face, my mother exclaimed, 'Patricia, you've cooked a pregnant bird!' At the reality of this horrifying news, my sister started to cry.
I
t took the family two hours to convince her that turkeys lay eggs!

Yup................SHE'S BLONDE

Hey kids,

I've been doing some work on our school's website. It's always a work
in progress; I'm trying to fix some things that we could do better and
add some new things that I've been learning.

Please give it a visit and bookmark it as one of your favorites. If
you're on a school computer, you may even consider making it your
homepage.

How many Boyer Valley students, parents, and alumni do you have in
your email address book? Recent grads in college? Any over in Iraq or
Afghanistan? I've had some tell me that since their Publisher's
illness, the Dunlap Reporter hasn't been able to maintain their
website, so recent graduates come to our school's site to see what's
going on.

http://www.boyer-valley.k12.ia.us

Have any ideas for how we can improve it? Is there anything that you
or your parents feel like you need on a school website? Let me know.
On the bottom of the page there's a "contact our website coordinator"
link, click it and send me an email. The goal is communication. You
can help me make it the best school website around.

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER - by Erma Bombeck
(Written after she found out she was dying from cancer).

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.
I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.
I would have talked less and listened more.
I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded
I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.
I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.
I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.
I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.
I would have sat on the lawn! With my grass stains.
I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.
I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.
Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.
When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, 'Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.' There would have been more 'I love you's'; more 'I'm sorry's.'
But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute...look at it and real ly see it.. live it and never give it back. STOP SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF!!!
Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more, or who's doing what
Instead; let's cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us.
Let's think about what God HAS blessed us with, and what we are doing each day to promote ourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally. I hope you have a blessed day.

Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes - Condolences

Click here to write your condolences to the Kline family

Bradley J. Kline, Jr.,age 15, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Saturday, October 27, 2007, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Mapleton, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, November 1, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend DeAnn Klapp will officiate, with burial to follow in the Odebolt Cemetery. Friends may call at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m.

Born July 21, 1992, in Omaha, Nebraska, Bradley Jay Kline, Jr. was the son of Bradley and Jodi (Hartwell) Kline. He recently moved with his family to Odebolt, Iowa, where he was a freshman at Odebolt-Arthur High School. Bradley will be remembered as a daredevil who enjoyed riding four-wheelers and go-carts. He also liked camping, fishing, music, and spending time with his family. Most of all, he loved playing hacky sack with his friends.

Survivors include his parents, Bradley and Jodi Kline of Odebolt; a brother, Brent (Megan) Young of Clarinda, two sisters, Ashley Kline and fiancé Eric Reimers of Clare, and Nichole Kline of Odebolt; maternal grandparents, Phillip and Sally Hartwell of Council Bluffs; paternal grandmother, Charlotte Cranford of Ponca City, OK; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Robert Kline, Sr.; and an uncle, Michael Kline.

Bradley Kline

Here is a page from our 2005-06 yearbook. As you can see, Bradley was incredibly agile, energetic and hard working as a mascot. Megan and Christine were on MS Football Cheer squad with him, so please keep them in your thoughts and prayers too.

Former Junior High Mascot lost in fatal auto accident

Any time you hear about an accident involving kids it's sad. When I heard that this accident happened so close to us, I was also nervous. My wife teaches at Mapleton, but I let it go when they didn't call her in to work (she's also a guidance counselor).

So it was terrible when I came in to school and Rena told me who one of the kids was. Bradley was an insanely gifted mascot. I had really hoped that he would continue on in high school but he struggled with grades and than his family moved out of our district. I had lost touch with him, but Rena has remained close to his sister, Nichole who cheer in both middle school and Varsity.

Heaven must need mascots. Bradley will be a great one.

Please pray for Nichole and the rest of Bradley's family and the families of the other kids in this accident. If you knew Brad and need to talk to someone, you know I'm always around and even though this is a crazy week with ITEDS, I'm sure our guidance counselor, Mrs. Bemus will try to work something out for you too.

Associated Press - October 28, 2007 7:24 PM ET

MAPLETON, Iowa (AP) - Two teenagers were killed and a third person was injured in a crash near Mapleton in western Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol says that 19-year-old Michael Babcock of Odebolt, and 15-year-old Bradley Kline Jr., of Schleswig, were killed in the wreck on Saturday.

Twenty-1-year-old Scott Mau of Odebolt was taken by helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Hospital officials did not give any information on his condition.

A patrol report showed that a pickup truck driven by Babcock left the road at a bridge just south of Mapleton in western Iowa.

The patrol says that two people were thrown from the truck and trapped underneath. The other occupant was found inside the truck.

The accident is believed to have happened about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. The truck wasn't found until 12 hours later.

The investigation was continuing.

Here's Cujo Jr. (Brad) with his Varsity sister, Nichole at last Tuesday's Jr Hi football game.

Cujo Jr did a great job. He's short, he can dance, and really boogies with his "C-Walk."
We hope he'll like it well enough to do it for the next 5 or 6 years and then go on to rock the NCAA in college!!!
