Football Tryouts

Here we go-

TENTATIVELY,
Tryout practices will be Monday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 9
Tryouts themselves will be Friday, May 11

Kassi, Christine, Rena, Sasha, Kensie, and Jessica all made it to the activity period meeting today, along with newcomer Kim. Megan was absent from school. I was hoping to see Kayla,Vicki or Kristen, and Vicki told me to expect Ashley- however, I know that all three of them may be interested in basketball but not football. Volleyball, Cross Country and both social and family dynamics certainly all come into play.

State rules allow 8 during football, but they only give us 7 passenger vans for away games. Just so you all know, I need to consider grades, abilities, experience, coachability, personal character, and cooperation/inter-personal skills as well, besides how candidates perform for judges on the day of the actual tryout. I know and really care about seven of the eight candidates we have so far. As much as I love 'em, ( and I REALLY do, like you're my own family) I'd still love to be able to choose six or eight from a field of over twenty, but what seems to happen for football season is that we start with a field of seven to ten and wind up with three or four. If any of you know anyone, including Eighth-through Eleventh graders who might be interested, please encourage them to talk to me and to tryout next month.

We have some insanely great seventh graders who'll be eighth graders next Fall, part of me wishes they were going to be Freshmen. Who knows if there are any sixth graders who'll be interested!

Blogthings - What Color Is Your Brain?

Blogthings - What Color Is Your Brain?

Your Brain is Purple

Of all the brain types, yours is the most idealistic.
You tend to think wild, amazing thoughts. Your dreams and fantasies are intense.
Your thoughts are creative, inventive, and without boundaries.

You tend to spend a lot of time thinking of fictional people and places - or a very different life for yourself.

I went through and organized my pictures so that they make more sense. There are tons of things to look at on this site- political cartoons, photography, paintings, graphic design, book reviews, songs, videos and links- and... all four of my blogs in one central location.

March news for girls

Dads & Daughters® Update
March 2007

THE PRICE OF SEXUALIZING GIRLS

Bad things happen when girls (from as early as toddlerhood) are surrounded by messages that the best thing they can be is “hot.” A new report from the American Psychological Association’s Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls says that sexualized images and pressures boost the risk of "three of the most common mental health problems of girls and women: eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression." The report lists Dads & Daughters as a resource to parents and advocates.

You can fight back by drawing girls out about how they feel about the sexualization trend—and by offering them positive alternatives such as sports, alternative media (like New Moon magazine www.newmoon.org), community involvement, arts programs, and other things that tell her (and her brothers) that you value who she is more than how she looks.

Read the APA report at: www.apa.org/pi/wpo/sexualization.html?imw=Y.

WOMEN'S PRO SOCCER LEAGUE IN 2008

Six investors and Major League Soccer are working to develop a new major professional women’s soccer league. The league will start in April 2008, building on the excitement of the 2007 Women’s World Cup in September. The league will have teams in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Washington, D.C., and one other city to be determined.

CALL TO ACTION ON UNDERAGE DRINKING

Although there has been a significant decline in tobacco and illicit drug use among teens, underage drinking has remained at consistently high levels. That’s why the U.S. Surgeon General's Office has just issued a Call to Action for Americans to do more to stop America's 11 million current underage drinkers from using alcohol, and to keep other young people from starting.

Acting Surgeon General Dr. Kenneth Moritsugu said "Too many Americans consider underage drinking a rite of passage to adulthood. Research shows that young people who start drinking before the age of 15 are five times more likely to have alcohol-related problems later in life. New research also indicates that alcohol may harm the developing adolescent brain.”

Moritsugu urged alcohol marketers to reduce outdoor ads, stop advertising in college newspapers, and end sponsorship of college sporting events.

Blogger Updates

Please bear with me as I try to update the old blog here. It will be all but fallow for a while anyway, since this is our off-season. Blogger is "out of beta" so I thought I'd try to clean up the template a little. Unfortunately that meant that I lost a lot of my colors and the top banner. I tried to tweak it but their new templates are all in XML code and I'm more familiar with HTML, and a little bit of XHTML... (or is it HXTML?) whatever, I feel like a shade tree mechanic who traded in his '67 muscle car for a 2008 performance coupe- clueless under the hood.

Keep watching for 1) changes to the template, 2) notices about track concessions and 3) football tryouts

Its all about attitude

“Words can never adequately convey the incredible impact of our attitudes toward life.
The longer I live the more convinced I become that life is 10% what happens to us
and 90% how we respond to it!”

DADDY'S GONNA EAT YOUR FINGERS

I didn't write this about one of my daughters, it was forwarded to me, but it's just the kind of thing that could've happened to me, so here I am passing it on. Don't worry, it's short and sweet-

DADDY'S GONNA EAT YOUR FINGERS

I was packing for my business trip and my three year old daughter was having a wonderful time playing on the bed. At one point she said, "Daddy, look at this," and stuck out two of her fingers.

Trying to keep her entertained, I reached out and stuck her tiny fingers in my mouth and said, "Daddy's gonna eat your fingers," pretending to eat them.

I went back to packing, looked up again and my daughter was standing on the bed staring at her fingers with a devastated look on her face.

I said, "What's wrong, honey?"
She replied, "What happened to my booger?"
