2012 BV Track Concessions- Cheer/Drill

Boyer Valley Cheer and Drill share concessions for Track. This is Cheer's only fundraiser. Below is the schedule of home track meets. Every Dancer and Cheerleader needs to sign up to work at least one meet.

Many Drill & Cheer members also run track- you still need to work concessions, so it is up to you to talk with your track coaches about missing practice to work either the Boys meet or a Junior High meet. It's not that hard, they're flexible and we've been doing this for decades. Worst case scenario, you can ask someone in NHS to work for you in return for service hours.

Drill members and parents- Cheer and Drill SHARE this fundraiser. Last year the Drill team held a competing grilling fundraiser at track which cost both squads revenue from concessions. May I humbly and cooperatively ask that either Drill please not set up a fundraiser that coincides with Track Concessions or that we find away to please share BOTH grilling and the concession stand revenues?

Drill team members, Cheerleaders, and Mascot- please look at the list of dates and tell Mr. Mallory when you'd prefer to be scheduled. I will go ahead and schedule anyone who has not made their request by Friday March 16. Drill and Cheer members are responsible for finding their own substitutes and then informing Mr. Mallory and/or Mrs. Dickinson as soon as possible before your assigned date. Thank You.

Unless you hear otherwise, please plan on practicing every Monday right after school.

"v." means home games
"@" means away

We ride the team bus to away games, I will try to post departure times on my board in the Art Room, but try to listen for them in the announcements too.

We need someone to volunteer to bring treats or candy for each home game.

Pep Rallies are only on Fridays when there are home games, we don't have any until January.

I'll send you a January calendar next month, it has a lot of Western Valley Conference Tournament games that are still "TBA" as far as their times and locations.

Basketball Tryouts

If there are enough candidates to hold tryouts, they will be held Wed Nov 16th.
Please see Coach Mallory in Room 219 paperwork.

There are 3 numbers used to help select cheerleaders;
1) the average of 3 teacher-recommendation forms
2) the Cheer candidate's GPA,
3) the average of the candidate's scores from judges at an actual tryout.
Please read the Tryout Outline to see what to expect

Final selection is at the discretion of the coach. IHSAA, IGHSAU, and ICCA rules all permit only 6 cheerleaders and one mascot on the court.
Candidates won't be permitted to tryout or to cheer without turning in the following:

Parent-Release Form - Signing this form indicates that you have also read and accept
Boyer Valley's Cheerleading Constitution
An Inherent Risk Waiver
3 Teacher Recommendation Forms
PE/Athletics Physical Exam Form

Uniforms are not costumes

There are rumors that people saw Boyer Valley Cheerleading uniforms used as Halloween costumes last night in Dunlap.

I guess I needed to have made our policy clear to you ahead of time. Our uniforms are uniforms, not costumes.

For future reference: No one should wear your uniform but you and you should never wear your uniform unless it is a Varsity game day and you will be cheering that night of participating at a pep-rally or if you will be representing the school at a school function (Homecoming parade, the "Senior Prom" at the Care Center, Rock-in-Prevention assembly, or some other school-sanctioned charitable event).

I don't know for sure that anyone did actually go trick-or-treating in a uniform, and if so who, so there won't be any consequences this time- but please keep this policy in mind from now on.

Consequences could include at least a one-game suspension or if it's believed that the violation was blatant, removal from squad.

Also, I consider poms to be part of your uniform. You are responsible for not losing them, so I'd prefer that they not be loaned out to any non-cheerleaders. I haven't said anything at football games, but they are more likely to be thrown, lost, damaged, or fought-over during basketball games- so please do not let crowd members play with them. Keep them with you at all times. Thank You

Breaking Cheer-Stereotypes

So you don't think you're the "Cheerleading Type?"

For people who don't think they want to come out for Cheer- I want you to think, if more people like you (whatever that means) would come out for Cheer, there might not be so many people who aren't like you on Cheer.For those of you who are already cheerleaders, I want you to make sure that you are breaking other people's misconceptions, not contributing to their prejudices. Cheerleading gives kids confidence, poise and a positive attitude. Like a lot of school sports, it helps them develop cooperation, initiative, self-control, self-respect, and lots of other skills.If you've never cheered before, don't let your assumptions about cheerleading keep you from trying out for basketball cheer. If you're already cheering- remember, you are a leader, make sure you act like one.

We don't have our names on our uniforms like some other sports. Which is good, because that way I don't have to remind cheerleaders that we're all about the name on the FRONT of the uniform, not the one on the back. Our JOB is not to show off, it's to ENCOURAGE the fans to ENCOURAGE the players on the field (or court).
If there's nothing else that I want to pound into kids heads, its that you can make life better by making it better for someone else. Call it a philosophy, a psychology, a theology, a pedagogy, or whatever you like- I like it and have been trying to share it for the last 19 years of coaching.

Think I'm naive? Maybe, so try it and find out. I bet that if for one week, you stop worrying about getting what you want or proving that you're right and spend more energy encouraging others and trying to stay positive, no matter how difficult- you're going to enjoy life a lot more. Life still won't be perfect, but it will be just a little easier to trudge through and you'll feel like you made a difference. Try it. I DARE you!

I used to tell my squads at LA Lutheran, "if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, people are gonna assume it's a duck." If you don't want people to call you nasty names, don't over do it with the make-up, don't dress too sexy, and be careful how and how much you flirt and who's around when you do it.
Will there still be mean people that call you names? Sure, this is high school after all, but believe it or not, you do have some control over your reputation.

I also used to tell LALHS squads what I still tell BV squads- don't get too close to, and absolutely don't touch any boys when you're in uniform. Trust me, your dads probably agree with me on that one.

Anyone can be a cheerleader. You don't have to have straight A's (although I want you to work toward that), you don't have to fit into somebody else's mold of what a cheerleader should be, and you don't have to be a size "zero." Of course, if you'd rather be a mascot- you REALLY won't have to worry about how you look in a skirt.

If you can keep a beat, shout, and smile- you've got what we need- let us work with you.

I'll admit, after coaching cheer for almost two decades, I derive a lot of my sense of purpose and identity from it- but I also need breaks from it once in a while. I have a family, I have friends, I'm involved in stuff outside of school.

There are worse things to invest your time and energy in than cheerleading. Drinking, smoking, sitting on the couch watching TV or playing video games all day all come to mind. Come to think of if, wasting time here on facebook does too! But my point is, the best cheerleaders aren't crushed if they can't cheer because they don't make it through tryouts, they get injured, or they have to take some time to raise their grades.

Cheerleading is what you do, it's not who you are.

I am excited about this group. It's been a stressful few weeks trying to recruit, but the cheerleaders we wound up with are all positive kids with good attitudes and good grades. Each is athletic and has experience with cheerleading, dance, and/or gymnastics.

I will keep squad members and their parents informed if/when I hear about opportunities for one or two-day cheer clinics if they are still available. The most likely one would be at Morningside University in Sioux City, which is usually in late June or early July. This would be a great opportunity and really inexpensive- but I recognize that softball and family vacation schedules may make it difficult.

Because we weren't able to meet at the end of the school year, between Track meets, the 8th grade field trip and softball practices- I would like us to practice for 3-4 days the first week of school. I know that I sold some candidates/parents on membership with the promise that Cheer won't be more of a burden on cheerleaders than just Friday nights, and because of their participation in Volleyball, Cross Country, and Drill Squad, I will try to keep our practices to a minimum, but I would like us to learn/review/refresh and get used to each other as much as possible in just those few days.

Because of their past experience with cheerleading and their outstanding qualifications, I have told Sophomore Katie Cogdill and Junior Taylor Rassell that the door is still open to their joining the squad if they'd like to. Although I didn't go so far as to officially designate them as "alternates."

In the best of all possible worlds, these 7 squad members would continue cheering all year long, but I recognize that Christian and Jennifer and probably Ally are already planning on just Football season. I also know of at least three candidates who had told me that they were interested in cheering for Basketball. Therefore we will probably have to hold tryouts again in November. Please encourage positive students that you think would be great cheerleaders or mascots to try out.

There's no excuse for not cheering.

What You Do For Your School: Cheerleading promotes school spirit, pride, enthusiasm, identity, community and sportsmanship for the whole school.

If you don't like the stereotypes of cheerleaders- go out for cheer yourself, or encourage someone to who won't be just another stereotype!

Are you scared? You'll never know if you can do something until you try!

So you say you're worried about grades- You're probably going to the game every Friday night ANYWAY, why not cheer while you're at it? Either I, or your squad-mates can help tutor you if you need it.

So you say you're worried about being involved in too many things- Volleyball, Cross Country, Drill Squad, Student Council? That's a Plus, not a Minus- it's one of the best parts of being at a small school. Statistics show that the MORE involved a kid is in high school, the better their grades and the more successful they'll be in college. I am the most flexible coach you'll ever have. Cheer won't take too much of your time. We used to practice 3 days a week, but now days, if enough of you have enough previous experience or skill, we can get away without it. I'll say it again- You're probably going to the game every Friday night ANYWAY, why not cheer while you're at it?

If you don't want to go out because you don't like someone else who's going out- Guess what? Maybe they won't make it! Unless of course there aren't enough people going out (because you don't) then they're pretty much all that's left, so of course they'll make it.

Is it because Coach Mallory has nagged you so much about coming out for Cheer that you're sick of being harassed? Sue me. I believe that cheerleading is good for you and for our school and I believe that you'd be good at it! Is that so bad?

I'm excited that so many of you have shown an interest in Cheering next Fall, I can tell that it's going to be a fantastic season. This email is to remind you that tryouts are coming up just next week, so I need you to remember to take care of your paperwork.

There are 3 numbers I use to help me select cheerleaders; the average of your teacher-recommendations, your GPA, and the average of your judge's scores from the actual tryout. So, I really need you to make sure that you get all 3 teacher recommendation forms in to me as soon as you can. You won't be permitted to tryout if you haven't turned in a Parent-Release Form by or before the tryout date, so please get that parent/guardian signature in to me ASAP. Stop by to pick up new copies if you've lost any. Remind those teachers to get their recommendation forms in to me ASAP too.

Drill Squad & Cheer; You still need to work track concessions

Cheer & Drill share track concessions. Most years we have 5 home meets and make a bundle of money. This year we only had 3. One got cancelled due to rain.

Cheer & Drill Squad members who are on Track were all scheduled to work the last meet, Monday May 9 because it's a Boy's Meet. Now, one of their rained-out meets is being rescheduled for that Monday.

I understand that Drill parents want to grill burgers and brats at the meet for a fundraiser. A girl just told me that no one on Drill can work concessions for that meet because their parents want them to sell burgers and brats. Won't that be taking money away from their own fundraiser by competing with the concessions stand for customers?

Many of the cheerleaders were also on Drill or are also on Track. Especially since this year we had 3 cheerleaders transfer to different schools this year and 2 more quit- I'll be lucky if I can have only one or two people able to work.

I hope that Coach Heese could please spare as many of her athletes as possible.

If you are scheduled to work on the 9th and are absolutely sure you can't, I suggest you ask people who were scheduled to work April 19th.Please see the schedule below. It has been posted for over a month now.

Drill Squad members still need to work at the concession stand because it is their fundraiser. It's none of my business if Drill parents want another fundraiser at the same time, but the Squad members are already previously committed to work the original one.

It's getting to be that time of year again. Boyer Valley Cheer and Drill Squads share concession duties at home track meets. Most years we host 5 track meets, so while there are only 3 dates now, Athletic Director Ernie Klein will no doubt have a couple more to add before too long. Please plan ahead for which meet you'd like to work.

Everyone who's participated in Cheer or Drill at BV in 2010-11 are expected to work at least one meet. Ideally we should have a crew of 5 squad members at each meet. Please let Mr. Mallory know what days you'd prefer to work as soon as possible. A sign-up sheet will become available next week.

We realize that many of you are also participating in Track yourselves. It may be best for Track athletes to work at the junior high meet or at the boy's meet, and non-Track members can work at the girl's meet and the coed high school meet (if/when Ernie schedules it). If for some reason you can not serve, it will be your responsibility to find someone to work for you- your best bet would be NHS members who need service hours.

These two quiet, shy cheerleaders are the the most loyal and dedicated. For all they lack, I think they'll be assets if they both want to return for football season next year too.

Last night's game was fantastic. It was a real barn-burner. We dominated the first quarter and held on to a 10 point lead through most of the second. Our the stands were overflowing, even though the game as almost 2 hours away.

Our student section stood the entire game and were a dream of a crowd for our two meek cheerleaders- who did a fantastic job most of the time and didn't let it ruffle their feathers at all when students initiated cheers on their own because the girls weren't. I was proud of them and they had a lot of fun.

In the end, we lost 49-46. A storybook half court shot looked like it would make it in with only a second or two on the clock, but sometimes those miracles don't happen in real life the way they do in movies. Everyone was heartbroken. I was really rooting for a couple of our Senior guys who are great Art students. I knew that it had to be devastating for them.

Western Valley Conference Tournament Basketball

Tonight's game at COU is not part of the WVC tourney, it's a non-conference game. Since it's boy's only away, we're not obligated to cheer. If at least 3 of you would still like to, that's fine. The bus leaves at 4:45, but I'll just drive myself since I live there.
We host the boys first round of conference tournament Tuesday night. Boyer Valley vs Ar-We-va at 7:30, so please be here by 7pm. If you want to watch the Manning/Logan game before, that one starts at the usual 6:00.
If we win we will host on Thursday 1/27 too. If we lose, I'm not sure where we'll play Thursday and I'll let you know as soon as they tell me (During District playoff tournaments, when we lose, we're done).
Saturday's game is TBA.
The Monday Jan.31 WVC is also TBA.

I was impressed when the girls decided to perform a stunt with their chant during one of the quarter breaks in the boy's game.

Yes, as a matter of fact, we know we need to be louder- but we're working hard and we have the right bricks in place from John Wooden's Pyramid of Success: Industriousness, Loyalty, Cooperation, Enthusiasm, INitiative, Intentness, and Team Spirit! So, we'll work on the other ones we still need, like Condition, Skill, Confidence and Poise. Give us time, we'll get there because we're determined to.

What a ton of things to share with you- First of all, Shout out to Shannon, Jasmine, and Quincey for having the spirit it takes to get up there and cheer alone last Friday night when Brenda, Brittney, Renea and Tiffany were gone.

Here are a truckload of things to think about or keep in mind:

I've got the stockings up in my room. Be sure to stop by to pick up your game evals the day after a game. Feel free to give each other notes, cards, treats or gifts between now an Christmas break. Make sure you get your stocking and take it home on the last day before vacation. That goes for Football cheerleaders too- that's one reason I'm sending you this email too.
Cammey, Kayla, Kaitlin, and Brenda- You still need to pay for your sweatshirts. I know money can be tight during the holidays, but I can't sell these to other people because they have your names on them. (Although, Brenda, I'll be glad to give you a discount since I made a mistake with your name.
Anyone who hasn't got a sweatshirt but wants one, more are on their way $30 (no names on the back).
Brittni K transfered to COU- bad news for us, because now we need a new mascot, but sounds like she gets to play basketball again, which is her heart, so we wish her luck. If anyone knows someone who'd be interested in being mascot, please let me know.
Tiffany let me know yesterday that she'd rather not cheer this year after all. I'm trying to talk her out of it, but we'll see what happens. We'll miss her bubbly energy, smile and sense of fun- not to mention her skills and experience, but will try to support her whatever she decides.
I've asked Cammey to think about coming back onto cheer with us this season to fill that hole. She's not sure she wants to give up being a fan in the stands- and we totally appreciate how she helps get the the crowd to cheer with us. She wants her friend Maddison McDonough to come out with her, but Maddie's not sure either.
Remember we have practice this Thursday Dec. 9
Bus time Friday is 4:30 to go to West Harrison
Saturday there is a home game, please be there around 5:30, all games start at 6PM- Brittney has volunteered to bring hospitality. Remember, I won't be there, because it's my daughter's birthday party. Paula our "Squad Mom" said that she will be. You can also look to Cammey in the crowd or Drill Coach Sarah Mahoney if you have any problems.
Next Friday, Dec. 17 is our first Pep Rally! Please plan on practicing the Monday and Thursday of that week to get ready.

For those of you who are new, here are the rules:
Sit together toward the front, behind the coaches.
No sitting with, flirting with, or any other fraternization with boys while in uniform
We are always the last on and the last off on the way there. The first ones on but the last ones off on the way home.
Try not to be too loud or silly on the way there, their coaches may want them to be focusing (but take your cue from how the players act).
Wish the teams good luck before the games.
If we lose, try to be somber and respectful on the ride home (again, take your cue from the teams).
If we win, obviously be congratulatory.
Please take any trash off of the bus that you create by bringing things on (bottles, chip bags, candy wrappers etc.)

It's a good idea to bring an ipod, homework, a book (with a book light), or like so many people a phone to play with. Try to get something to eat between when school lets out and the bus. Blankets are also an excellent idea considering the temps at night.

Skeleton Crew

Whereas there were more MS cheerleaders than usual, there were far fewer high school cheerleaders than usual. 2 were recovering from State Drill Competition, one was ineligible for grades, and another just plain forgot her uniform. So we were left with Quincey and rookies Jasmine and Shannon. We weren't too loud, but you know, I was proud- because these kids had the courage to stand up there in front of everybody and do the best they could. They stuck with it where others would've skipped out. That show's commitment and guts and that's something to be really proud of.

Shout-outs to former cheerleader Cammey and her buddy Maddie for working from withing the crowd to keep the spirit going and help Jaz, Shan, and Q out.

Another shout-out to the Missouri Valley cheer squad- you guys are LOUD, sharp, and synchronized! Three things all cheer squads should aspire to. Keep up the good work.

I'm a little rusty on the camera. My settings were off so most of the shots I took turned out blurry. First games are always the worst for cheer squads. I was happy with them and they'll get better. Both our basketball teams won their games.

Shout out to the Missouri Valley squad- they went to cheer camp last summer and it shows- they're really LOUD.

BK did great her first time as Cujo. Remember next time, it gets hot in that costume, so don't wear sweats underneath!

Cathrine and Jamie cheered a couple of games last week (no pictures because I had to run the clock, sorry Jamie). Tonight was the first game for Lexus and Kayla. Maybe next time we can get all 4.

These girls did fantastic, they're all really loud and kept cheering pretty frequently. We can still polish up some, but I'm really proud of how well they did.

Meanwhile both the 7th and 8th grade Girls' teams beat the Bobcats. The 7th graders did it 29-27 in a real nail-biter!

Mr. Straight let the faculty know today that students need to be where they are scheduled to be, and he reminded us that students are not to be in any computer labs without adult supervision.

I don't know if there have been problems with students from other classes too, or if the Art room is the only problem- but I need you to be where you're supposed to be, including during lunch, D.E.A.R., P.E. and study hall times.

If you need to ask me something about one of my classed or cheer, or if you need tutoring for a social studies class, you need to check in for attendance with your DEAR or Study Hall teacher first and get a pass to come seem me, and you can't just hang out to avoid being somewhere else.

Does anyone else live in Dow City, who could give Brenda a ride home so she can attend practices?
Tiffany works Mondays and Wednesdays, Coach has to attend teacher in-services on Wednesdays
IF (I don't know yet) we run into any issues with only being able to take 6 instead of 8 to away games, Brittany B and Jasmine R will be considered "alternates" for away games (sorry girls, you're the Freshmen).

I'd love to have us learn some stunts- but that will mean committing time focus. Chants are our first priority.

A Game Plan for Life: The Power of Mentoring by John Wooden

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Many years ago, when I was teaching at Los Angeles Lutheran High, our friend and former Vice Principal had become a family therapist. The psychologists she worked with had developed what they called a "Life Model." One aspect of the life model was a mentoring continuum, having people older than yourself whom you learn from and friends younger than yourself whom you can try to spiritually parent.

I remember thinking that it was a noble ideal, but wasn't sure how I could put it into action. I didn't have a lot of friends above my age range and wasn't sure that I could fit it into my schedule. As a teacher I was sold on trying to disciple young people, but figured I was better off allowing relationships to develop rather than trying to deliberately fabricate them.

Later on this same concept was proposed by the Promise Keeper's movement. I attended a couple of PK conferences with my Principal, who I suspect was seeking to be my mentor- but for whatever reason, we never seemed to "click." PK recommended having older men mentor you and hold you accountable and younger men whom you could challenge and teach as well.

At this time I had a couple of pastors who were older than me and a prestigious painter who'd retired from LALHS before I started teaching there, but I never seemed to manage to become the close confidant with any of them that I imagined being mentored entailed. Meanwhile I felt like I was managing to shepherd and be available for some students, but it seemed like most of them were young women- it didn't seem like I had the same kind of connections with boys. No doubt being a cheerleading coach and Art teacher had some to do with that.

When we moved back to Iowa and left Lutheran High for a public school, I wanted a way to reach the girls I coached and be able to help develop their character since I'd now be in a secular setting. At first I leaned on Norman Vincent Peale's Power of Positive Thinking and eventually discovered Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success.

It didn't occur to me that I hadn't just found material to help me mentor students and athletes, I had myself, found a mentor.

In this book, Coach Wooden explains that mentors can be real people you have meaningful relationships with, like his father, leaders you look up to and who model a great example for you, like his high school coach and principal, people who care for you and try to guide you, like Wooden's college coach at Purdue. But leaders may even be people you don't actually know personally, whom you study and admire, and whom you either try to emulate or who's thinking and ideas shape your own. In Wooden's case, Abraham Lincoln and Mother Theresa. AND, mentors may be peers and loved ones, not just your elders- people who influence you and who you learn from, like a close friend or even a spouse.

The second half of this book was written by seven people for whom Wooden was a mentor. They each write about how he influenced their character, philosophy and lives. Sure there are famous athletes he coached, like Careem Abdul Jabaar, but there are also other coaches he worked with and a teacher who had never really met Wooden- but who had read everything by the Wizard of Westwood until he was asked to contribute to this book.

Last week I attended a conference for college and high school teachers where the key note speaker challenged us to do something positive that would help us build community. He asked us to contact at least 3 people who had contributed positively to our lives and let them know how much we appreciated it.

At first I was stumped. My old Psych Professor had passed away. My old newspaper publisher had passed away. I didn't have an address for my old Education Prof. who was starting a school in Vietnam of something like that. What could I do?

I looked behind me instead of looking ahead of me. I wrote some of my former students who had meant a lot to me. Then, coincidentally, I stumbled across another Ed. Prof. on a professional networking site. Then I found the email address of the first Ed. Prof. Then a google search turned up the new church where one of those old pastors was now serving.

They all replied to my emails by telling me that I'd made their day. One of the students wrote back to tell me how much I had meant to them.

What I realized by reading this book is that mentoring is both simpler/easier/less forced than I had assumed, and at the same time even more profound and important than I realized. It is definitely something we should all be doing, for ourselves, and for others.

Tryouts for basketball cheer will be some time before Thanksgiving. A tentative date is still pending.
As usual, if we have just 4-6 who are set to go, we'll waive the tryouts. If we have 10-20, especially if there's a lot of inexperience, we'll have some kind of a tryout, which you'll all do fine on.

The idea was to make the video available for candidates trying out and for both MS and HS Cheerleaders so that they could practice at home. We thought we were going to have several MS cheerleaders for the away game against Charter Oak-Ute, but, according to Marissa (who's Mom was the ride for Emily & Larissa too), she had to go to her brother's 12th birthday party. And so it goes. Be that as it may, Catherine's Mom still drove her to the game. I thanked her for coming but let her know that I wouldn't MAKE her cheer alone. She decided to wrangle up a couple of 6th grade girls who happened to be at the game and the three of them did a terrific job! I was really proud of them. The got the crowd to cheer with them, they did push-ups when we scored, they even did a few cartwheels. Loud and PROUD! Way to show your spirit, Cat.

I may say this kind of thing almost every year, but I TRULY mean it this time- it couldn't have happened to a nicer girl. Sure she has model good looks, sure she'd involved in a lot of stuff, and sure she's popular and all that- but as long as I've known her, Kaitlyn Bonsall has been accepting and friendly to all students no matter who they are (or how weird they are, frankly). She treats everyone the same. She's one of the hardest working students I know and she also happens to be one of the best artists in the school. She could be fooling me, I am pretty gullible, but I'm pretty sure that she's pretty well grounded and has a lot of character and integrity too. I'm really happy for her and proud of her as her cheerleading coach. I'm also really proud of the students at Boyer Valley, not just for voting for her, but really, all six of the Senior guys and girls you voted in as candidates are basically great kids, not just popular or good looking.

I was impressed by how well and how quickly you all learned your first chant today. It should be easy for you to learn a lot of chants next Wednesday so that you'll do well at our first game next Thursday. I'm REALLY excited about what a great Cheer program we have this year- thanks to YOU!

It will be wonderful if we can get more than 3 people at any of the Monday games this season, although I want to support the Cross Country and Volleyball teams and coaches anyway I can, so please pick a date and run it by your VB or XC coaches first. I realize that many of you may not end up cheering in high school, so I hope that what you learn in MS Cheer will be fun and give you a great sense of school spirit. FYI, Cammey Hast cheers at HS FB games even though she plays Volleyball, so if you learn enough and get good enough, we can make things work (basketball's harder).

Reminder- I've already ordered t-shirts for everyone but Cat, Chelsea, and Cassie, so as soon as you bring your $15 you can have the top part of your uniform. We'll get the skirts out to you next week, before the game Thursday. I will order shirts for the 3C's ASAP, I have some non cheerleaders that are interested too.

90-90 Hip Shift with Hemi Bridge and Balloon modified from Postural Rest...

This is an easy and AWESOME conditioner. You say you want to work on your abs, your obliques, and your glutes?

I say I want you to work on your diaphragm so that you can yell louder and longer at a lower pitch. If you ever want to build stunts, you're going to need a strong core, whether you're a base or a flier.

THIS simple exercise works ALL of that! Weird and new as it looks, watch this video and give it a try.

As if abs and glutes weren't enough- it improves your posture too, which should help your poise and confidence (two of the last 5 Pyramid blocks).

Calves on the wall, use a stool or exercise ball if it helps, smaller ball between your knees, thighs parallel to the wall, then try blowing up a balloon.

Try it, I DARE you. I know these seem crazy, but this Postural Restoration/Balloon exercise and the Cross-Crawl that I shared with you at the beginning of the summer are OUTSTANDING cheer conditioners.

Alertness - Please try to notice things about a person, place or thing that you previously overlooked. Share what you notice with someone else.

Self Control - Please try not to expressing every feeling you have as soon as you feel it. Please try to see how long you can go without cussing or using the finger. Please challenge yourself to deliberately do something healthy for yourself or kind for someone else every day that you either ordinarily wouldn't or would by nature not want to do.

Friendship - If you haven't yet, please try to learn more about someone on either HS or MS cheer whom you don't know very well. Please try to see potential or positive things in someone who perhaps you've considered mildly annoying. Please write a note to someone who's already your friend telling them something you admire or appreciate about them.

Loyalty - Start buying lots of things that are purple or have something to do with bulldogs. It doesn't have to be clothing, it can be pencil cases or bookmarks or nail polish or cards. Anything.

Cooperation- Please read or re-read through each of the notes I've posted about the Pyramid of Success so far. Please think about things you can do to help cheer go smoothly this year- especially if you've seen sports or clubs (including cheer) that had a lot of conflict in the past.

Enthusiasm - Please get excited about how YOU are going to get to rev people up, be positive and encouraging to make our school a better place, and build a sense of community and pride at BV

Industriusness - PLEASE view the DVD's I gave out at the end of the year and try to learn or review as many chants as you can. Please work on and practice as many cheer jumps as you can.

Your most valuable piece of equipment

Your most valuable piece of equipment as a cheerleader is... your voice, of course. I recently took a class for teachers and school professionals on crisis intervention and they taught us about using our voices to defuse potentially volatile situations with our voices. They explained that "non-verbals" doesn't just refer to facial expression and body language- some of the most powerful part of communication is not what you say, but how you say it. In other words, it's not the words, but the non-verbal vocal qualities that can calm, intimidate, or in the case of a cheerleader- invigorate.

The instructors, both school psychologists explained to us how important 3 aspects of our voices are.

Tone
Volume
Cadence

Tone- if a student is anxious, defensive, or acting-out, adults need to avoid sounding impatient, condescending or inattentive. People can HEAR if you care and if you're calm. When an adult tells you that they "don't like your tone of voice," it probably means that no matter what your words said, you sounded ironic, sarcastic, patronizing, or disrespectful.

In the same way, the crowd can hear if you're confident and poised, but more importantly, they can hear if you're intneted, invested, and enthusiastic. Invested- you care that the team do well. Enthusiastic- you're having fun and you're positive and you want the crowd to have fun and stay positive- even if the team's down. Intented- that means you're purposeful, your purpose is to raise the energy level and your objective is to get the crowd to cheer WITH you. (Intentedness, enthusiasm, confidence and poise are all blocks in John Wooden's famous Pyramid of Success).

Another word for tone is expression. Practice reading things with different types of expression and you'll realize how much how you say something can change how the meaning may be interpreted. This will make you a better reader, a decent actor, a great cheerleader and a very effective communicator. This is a skill that will help you all through your life, no matter what your job is, with just about anybody and in almost any situation.

Volume- Teachers need to use an appropriate volume taking into consideration distance and situation... Inside voice? Outside voice? Classroom lecture voice? Polite conversation voice? Private conversation voice? Library/Movie theater/Church/Funeral Home voice? Factory assembly line floor voice? You see what I'm getting at? How many kids don't go out for sports because they complain that the coach is always yelling at them? Hello- They're outdoors with 20-40 noisy kids and they have to make sure that everyone can hear them- they're yelling TO you not necessarily AT you.

This goes without saying. Any cheerleader needs to be heard from at least 50 feet away. There are plenty of things you can do to work on this. Ask me if you'd like some exercises. Don't be surprised if I post some here on the blog or on facebook whether you ask for them or not. Posture and pitch have a lot of effect on volume. Using your diaphragm is key. Strong core muscles and respiratory endurance all help too. No smoking either.

Finally Cadence- If a teacher wants you to understand and follow directions, they need to deliver their instructions using an even rate and rhythm. Readers and actors have to consider their flow or fluency. For cheerleaders, you have to be two things- even (AKA consistent) and deliberate (not too slow, but definitely not out of control- too fast). The analogy I use with my squads is a locomotive. You're the engineers for the "Spirit Train," and the fans in the stands are all hobos. Only unlike the Union Pacific, you WANT all the hobos to get on board with you. Travel too slow and they'll feel like you'll never get them anywhere. Travel as fast as a magnetic bullet-train and they'll have no hope of ever climbing on. You have to keep it even and steady, so they can match you and understand you, beat for beat, syllable for syllable.

Obviously pitch and inflection are really important too, but for now, try working on your tone, volume, and cadence. If you can skillfully master your most important piece of equipment, you'll quickly become powerfully effective at leading cheers.

The Cross Crawl

This exercise helps coordinate right and left brain (something my Drawing students know about) by exercising the information flow between the two hemispheres. It is useful for spelling, writing, listening, reading and comprehension. Stand or sit. Put the right hand across the body to the left knee as you raise it, and then do the same thing for the left hand on the right knee just as if you were marching.Just do this either sitting or standing for about 2 minutes.

Cheerleaders and Drill Teamers- This is a phenomenal way to help you develop your coordination, rhythm, balance, and even core (abs) strength.

To make sure you get between 20 and 30 reps, you could say the alphabet to yourself. I like the standing version, but I know many people do it on their backs.

Here's another version of it. Check this out. This chiropractor is doing it on all fours. He may look ridiculous- but this simple exercise is not just done for physical therapy and rehab- Olympic athletes use this to train.

Follow this link to a flyer and registration form for Morningside's 2010 High School Cheer Camp that we will be offering this summer. We are very excited to be bringing in an official NCA Instructor to lead the camp and I think it will be an excellent opportunity for your cheerleaders!

This is a great one day "camp," and it's really cheap too. I'm taking a class at Morningside in July already, so we might have to figure out some kind of transportation, but it's definitely worth it.

Bit of an identity crisis

This blog is this blog kind of a fun photo album/scrap book for my cheer squad and a (hopefully) a means of communicating to both those cheerleaders and their parents. Lately it's made more sense and been easier to fulfill these functions on facebook.

As the school Web site coordinator, I really feel like much of this blog's content needs to start being featured there. As technology in Education continues to evolve and teachers and coaches like me seek to make Web content more interactive for students, I've been toying a lot lately with establishing a Cheer Wiki.

All this leaves me very tempted to return this blog to my original intention, a journal about my unique opinions and experiences as a male coach in a predominantly female sport. Which, like every other wannabe here on the Web, I could eventually turn into a book, good luck, right?

Worst case scenario, I'd just get lazy and leave it fallow since it's main purposes are being taken care of either on facebook or by direct email. But we'll see. If nothing else, I'll just duplicate material here, that way all you'll have to do is search for it and it will be archived here.

Work on your Jumps

Four great ways to work on jumps over summer are 1. on a trampoline, 2. under water IN the pool, 3. off the side or diving board INTO the pool, 4. get this, it increases your height, strength and sharpness- with ANKLE WEIGHTS!
